Executive Summary
In May 2024, Tom Burchell, President of Burchell Nursery, returned to Tajikistan to evaluate the long-term impact of a 2017 agricultural development project. This visit coincided with the annual California Fruit Harvest Festival and provided an opportunity to witness the maturation of orchards established with Burchell Nursery's specialized fruit and nut varieties.
Historical Foundation: The 2017 USAID Project
The partnership began in 2017 through the USAID Tajikistan Agricultural and Water Activities (TAWA) project. Burchell Nursery supplied 36 new varieties of stone fruits and nuts to local farmers to improve crop diversity and productivity in the region.
Total Shipment: 1,484 plants were imported to establish mother blocks.
Varietal Diversity: The shipment included almonds, apples, apricots, peaches, nectarines, cherries, and plums.
Strategic Placement: Mother blocks were established across 12 districts in the Khatlon Province to serve as ongoing propagation sources.

The 2024 Tajikistan Trip
From May 14 to May 18, 2024, Tom Burchell visited Dushanbe and the Khatlon province. The primary focus of the trip was the California Fruit Harvest Festival on May 15, an event showcasing early-ripening varieties that have successfully adapted to the local climate.
During his stay, Tom met with key stakeholders including:
Dr. Sadriddin Juraev: The Stone Fruit Value Chain Technical Lead who has managed the varieties' integration.
Ministry of Agriculture Officials: Discussions were held regarding the "Open Doors" policy for continuing horticultural development.
Local Nurseries: Visits were conducted to nurseries currently propagating Burchell varieties to supply local demand.

Agricultural Impact Report
The introduction of Californian varieties has led to a significant transformation in Tajikistan’s stone fruit sector.
Key Performance Indicators
Metric | Current Status (2024) |
|---|---|
Active Farmers | Over 100 farmers have established orchards |
Land Coverage | Over 300 hectares of commercial orchards created |
Variety Adaptation | 16+ varieties highly favored and well-adapted to Khatlon |
Local Propagation | 3 local nurseries actively multiplying Burchell varieties |

Top Performing Varieties in Tajikistan
Farmers have reported exceptional results with specific varieties that offer high productivity and harvest quality:
Apricots: Apache, Castlebrite, Lorna, and Robada.
Peaches: Florida Prince, Queencrest, and Angelus.
Nectarines: Summer Fire, Red Jim, and Flavortop.
Almonds: Nonpareil and Wood Colony.
Socio-Economic and Spiritual Impact
Beyond agricultural metrics, the project has fostered deep community connections. During his visits, Tom was invited into farmers' homes to share his faith and stories. Farmers expressed great pride in their harvests, which have provided a "bumper crop" and significant income improvements for many families.

Future Collaboration
Based on the success of these varieties, Burchell Nursery has transitioned to a long-term partnership model. Dr. Sadriddin Juraev has been appointed as the official representative and manager of licensing agreements for California fruit varieties in Tajikistan. This framework will allow for the controlled distribution of certified, virus-free budwood to ensure the continued growth of high-quality orchards across the country.
